Spotted: TaylorMade Spider Tour Putters

As if the FedEx Cup playoffs aren’t enough excitement, we add some new TaylorMade putters to amp up the week! We spotted the new TaylorMade Spider Tour lineup at the BMW Championship this week.

TaylorMade looks to be going a little retro in some of the designs with a more original-looking Spider Tour. The new putters look to be cast and finished in what looks to be a slightly darker version of the famous Hydro Blast silver. Each putter has a sole plate that we can assume is made of a lighter material in order to move more weight to the outside of the head.

The face insert is TaylorMade’s Pure Roll and looks to be a TPU material for better roll and a softer feel at impact. Each model also looks to have at least two neck options, offering more or less toe hang.

The Spider Tour’s looks take us back to the original Spider with the rear wings that contain interchangeable weights. This head shape moves weight way back and to the outside of the head in order to boost MOI and give the putter a very stable feel through the stroke. We’ve spotted single site lines as well as True Path alignment aids on the top of the putter.

This model moved the interchangeable weights forward, which could give the Spider Z more of a blade putter feel through the stroke. The forward weight can also help with moving the CG in the head to improve speed, spin, and distance control. The top of the putter contains True Path alignment on both the double bend and slant neck versions of the putter.

If you are a fan of the Spider X Hydro Blast putter, then the Spider Tour X should look very familiar to you. From the small “wings” on the back corners to the True Path alignment, this putter keeps the tour-proven shape of the Spider X alive. TaylorMade has moved the weights from the wings to the sole of the putter but kept them far back and to the outside of the club. This is going to keep the forgivness and MOI high, producing straighter putts when you don’t strike the center of the putter.

The final version of the new Spider Tour series is the more sleek-looking V model. The Spider Tour V smoothes out the lines and offers a cleaner look behind the ball. We are going to assume that the large sole plate is used to move some weight around to keep the stability you would expect from a Spider putter. Even though this putter lacks wings like its siblings, I would expect it to still be forgiving. The weights are pushed forward towards the face like the Spider Tour Z to work with the Pure Roll face insert to dial in speed and spin. We spotted the Tour V with both a double bend shaft that should be face-balanced and a short slant neck for added toe hang.

All of the Spider Tour putters we spotted this week were equipped with a black steel shaft and a TaylorMade pistol grip. The grip looks to be black rubber with small perforations on it and on the smaller size. The headcovers are black, grey, and white with blue stitching to match the soles on the putters.

TM going back to what worked best. The new deeper grooved insert from the past couple of years starting with Spider EX to current-model year spiders doesn’t feel very good. I’d love to try the 2022 and 2023 Spiders but with the older insert (or better yet milled faces).

Alas, I am not on PGAT, nor am I a top TM staffer, so I’m fairly confident I won’t seeing any prototypes coming my way.
